Common Questions:
+ Do we have to buy the book?
We do not send material that requires being printed. Students are responsible for getting a copy of the story prior to enrolling in class. The book is available via most public libraries in the United States and also available for purchase in many online stores, including Amazon.
+ Is this book violent?
The Percy Jackson series includes violence (humans versus immortal creatures), themes of bullying, and non-marital relationships (kids born out of wedlock). It is understood that those re-enrolled in the course are mature enough to understand these complex human relationships and that the fictional material reflects real human relationships. This course does not discuss religion and families are encouraged to think about whether their own religious or moral beliefs may conflict with their child’s ability to understand the book.
+ My child has seen the movie, should they take this course?
There are many film and t.v. adaptations of Percy Jackson and The Lightening Thief. Viewing one of the films or the t.v. show does not replace reading the book. The book includes details that are not in the adaptations, and reading the book allows students to enhance their vocabulary. This course provides insight on the themes within the book as well as information on Greek Mythology.
+ My child has studied Greek Mythology in school, should they take this course?
There are many Greek Myths and retellings of these stories. Students may be familiar with some of the characters, but may also find information on these characters that they hadn’t know before.
